Jakim revokes 3,068 halal certificates
Among the reasons for the revocation were serious violations in meeting Shariah or technical standards at halal-certified premises.
PETALING JAYA: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has revoked 3,068 Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) certificates as of yesterday due to non-compliance with the certification requirements and standards.
Among the reasons for the revocation were serious violations of Shariah or technical standards at halal-certified premises, as well as other issues outlined in Clause 32 of the 2020 Malaysian Halal Certification Procedure Manual (MPPHM).
Jakim’s Halal Management Division Director, Muhyidin Aziz@Saari, said that his department, along with state Islamic councils or departments, regularly conduct periodic and scheduled monitoring, as well as continuous enforcement, to address any issues related to the misuse of halal logos and fraud regarding halal compliance.
He added that information is also often obtained through complaints and during the enforcement of related laws.
He stated that three types of non-compliance are often encountered, which could lead to the suspension or revocation of halal certificates during monitoring.
“SPHM (Malaysian Halal Certification) can be suspended and may be elevated to revoked status if the holder fails to implement corrective actions within the stipulated timeframe.
“This is an example of minor non-compliance, and the decision to revoke the certificate can be made based on the decision of the Malaysian Halal Certification Panel, as it shows a lack of commitment from the SPHM holder.
If there is a major non-compliance by the industry, the SPHM can also be revoked, and for serious non-compliance, the SPHM is immediately revoked during monitoring,” he said, according to Harian Metro.
He added that, however, the ongoing monitoring and enforcement efforts have led to an increase in compliance with halal certification standards, indicating the seriousness of the industry and heightened awareness of halal issues in the country.
