Trader who beat ex-wife into a coma sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Sessions Court sentenced a trader to 10 years in prison for causing severe injuries to his third ex-wife, leaving her in a coma in June 2021.

Judge Fatimah Zahari handed down the sentence to Rosmaini Abg Raof, 41, after the court was satisfied that the prosecution had successfully proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

On June 17, 2021, Rosmaini was accused of assaulting the head, face, and hands of Jahidah Nordin @ Sylvester, 46, and stomping on the back of her hand while she was 10 weeks pregnant, leaving her in a coma.

According to the charge sheet, he was accused of committing the act at an apartment in Kampung Aman, Larkin, at 6 a.m. on May 4, 2021.

For this offense, he was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine, and read together with Section 326A of the same code, which allows for the sentence to be doubled.

Jahidah, a civil servant, successfully delivered a baby boy via surgery on November 30, 2021.

On March 15 last year, the Seremban Syariah Lower Court granted a fasakh divorce application filed by Jahidah’s family on February 1, 2023.

On November 3, the final decision in the defense case had to be postponed after Rosmaini failed to appear in court, citing hospitalization due to illness.

The court also rejected the defense team’s request, led by Kamal Hisham Ja’afar, to delay sentencing pending an appeal to the High Court.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Fatimah Mamu, while the accused was represented by Kamal, Mohd Salleh Togimin, and Aina Kamilah Zalizan.

Observing lawyers representing Jahidah’s family, Muhammad Hazeem Mohd Norizan and Syufri A Samad, were present during the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Jahidah’s younger sister, Fauziah, 43, told the media after the court proceedings that she was grateful that the three-year wait for justice for her sister had come to an end.

“Alhamdulillah, the case is over today. From now on, we will continue our lives as usual, take care of Kak Jahidah, and hope she recovers quickly while her child grows up well,” she said.
