Saravanan obtains committal order in defamation suit
The case stemmed from a series of defamatory videos uploaded by Manimaran against Saravanan since January 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 – Former Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan today succeeded in obtaining an order of committal against Manimaran Manickam in a defamation suit, filed by the ex-minister in August, last year.
In a significant ruling, the Kuala Lumpur High Court granted Saravanan’s application for an order of committal against Manimaran in relation to the defamation suit filed by Saravanan, who is MIC Deputy President and Tapah MP.
Following an hour-long hearing presided over by High Court judge Dr Suzana Muhamad Said, the learned judge agreed with the oral submissions presented by Vischaal Yogaratnam, the solicitor for Saravanan.
The case stemmed from a series of defamatory videos uploaded by Manimaran against Saravanan since January 2022.
The defamation suit, filed in March 2022, highlighted five specific videos where Manimaran directly defamed Saravanan, leading to a negative public perception.
The repercussions of these actions had caused a negative impact towards the good image and reputation of Saravanan.
Further to the filing of the suit, Saravanan had filed an application for an interim injunction against Manimaran which was granted by the Court in August last year.
The interim injunction had prohibited Manimaran from publishing any defamatory content against Saravanan.
However, Manimaran breached the injunction order by continuing to publish defamatory videos on YouTube on August 2022.
Consequently, Saravanan filed for leave to commence committal proceedings against Manimaran, which was granted in October,2022.
Today’s hearing concluded with the High Court granting the order for committal, imposing a RM15,000 fine on Manimaran. He is required to remit the amount to the court within sevendays.
Failure to comply will result in a 3- day imprisonment. – Xklusif
